More sales. Less cash. What’s going on?
Growth can hide a cash problem. Follow the journey from a sale to money in the bank.
The gap between growth and cash
A sale and a payment are different events. A business can book more revenue while paying for stock, staff and delivery before customers pay their invoices. That timing gap puts pressure on cash even when sales look healthy.
Follow the money through the process
Map when money leaves and when it returns. Look at supplier terms, stock purchases, customer payment terms and overdue invoices. Compare these on a week-by-week timeline rather than relying only on a monthly sales total.
Ask what each sale contributes
Higher sales do not automatically produce stronger margins. Discounts, wastage, delivery costs and extra labour can absorb the gain. Estimate what remains from each product or order after the costs needed to fulfil it.
A practical next step
Build a simple weekly cash forecast. Record expected receipts, planned payments and the opening balance. Update it with actual results. Use the difference to identify which assumptions need attention before committing to more growth.
